Explanations on the police crime statistics:
The police crime statistics record the crimes and offenses known to the police, including attempts punishable by law, and the suspects identified by the police. Since 01.01.1971, "initial statistics" have been kept nationwide, i.e. the known crimes are only recorded after the police investigation has been completed by the department responsible for final processing and when the file is handed over to the public prosecutor's office or court.

Developments in the state of NRW and in other police authorities

Here you will find monthly updated information on developments in selected crime areas at state level and in the district police authorities as well as a file in machine-readable CSV format.

As a result of a nationwide decision this year, sexual assault offenses pursuant to Section 177 StGB will no longer be counted as violent crime from October 2017. Rape and sexual assault in accordance with Section 177 StGB are still included in the violent crime figures. This may lead to lower monthly case numbers for violent crime.
